America’s Troy Merritt has today won the Kodak Challenge and the accompanying US$1 million winner-take all purse when he birdied the first hole of a playoff to defeat Aaron Baddeley and Rickie Fowler in the season long event.
Over the course of the 2010 PGA Tour schedule, golf holes at 30 different venues were selected as the Kodak Challenge holes with the player recording the best scores on 18 of those holes the winner of the huge prize.
Baddeley and Fowler had trailed Merritt into this week’s Children’s Miracle Worker Classic at the Magnolia Golf Club in Lake Buena Vista but both recorded birdies at the nominated hole, the par four 17th during their opening two rounds.
Then, all three players were tied but Merritt still had the chance to break the deadlock over the final 36 holes if he could birdie the hole on either of the final two rounds.
He double bogeyed the hole on Saturday and missed an opportunity today but when they returned to fight it out in extra time Merritt all but holed his approach and it was all over.
