Laycock inaugural winner on Surf Coast

Victorian Scott Laycock has won the inaugural Surf Coast Knockout defeating Queensland’s Andrew Buckle in the final at the Sands Torquay in Torquay.
Layocock had only just crept into the field of 32 on Saturday evening after surviving a nine way playoff for the two remaining places in the field for Sunday’s shootout.

A series of six hole elimination matches would determine the outcome of the event. Laycock defeated the leading qualifier Peter O’Malley in round one, Victorian Peter Wilson in round two, West Australian Steve Collins in round three and South Australian Adam Bland in round four before taking on Nationwide Tour player Buckle in the final.

Laycock went one up with a birdie at the first hole of the final and was never behind although Buckle made it a close contest with a birdie at the second hole to draw level. The deadlock was broken when Layock birdied the 5th hole and when both parred the final hole Laycock had become the first winner of this innovative event.

Laycock has played the Japan Golf Tour for much of his career although after losing his status there in 2008 he has focused his attention on local and One Asia events in recent times. His only victory in Japan came very early in his career there winning the Bridgestone Open in 2002.

In the playoff for third and fourth this week, Leigh McKechnie was a decisive 3 & 2 winner over South Australian Adam Bland. Laycock earned $20,000 for the victory with Buckle picking up a cheque for $12,000.

The PGA Tour of Australasia’s next event will not be until the final week of February when the Queensland PGA Championship is played in Toowoomba.
