Tseng ready for Australian Open defence

The stage is set for an intriguing battle in tomorrow’s final round of the Handa Australian Women’s Open with the defending champion Yani Tseng the leader by three over Jiyai Shin and by four over Eun Hee Ji.

Last year Tseng came from four behind the third round leader to claim the title but tomorrow the boot is on the other foot as she becomes the hunted rather than the hunter.

A bogey at the last hole in today’s third of 68 by the leader might just have opened the door enough for Shin and Ji to still fancy their chances of catching the world number five but clearly this is a golf course on which the Chinese Taipei player has a comfort zone. She has played her last four rounds in a total of 21 under par and an under par round of any description might be enough to hold off her well credentialed challengers.

Australian Katherine Hull, still looking for her first Australian Open, is two behind Ji and it would seem needs a repeat of today’s low round of the day (67) if she is to have any chance.

Nikki Campbell is the next best Australian at 6 under and eight behind the leader.

The leading amateur is 13 year old New Zealander Lydia Ko who was quite brilliant today with her round of 68 to move to 5 under and a share of 10th position.

Play in round two resumed at 10.30am local time this morning after the rain delay on Friday with the cut falling at 3 over.
