Brett Rumford is the surprise name at the top of the BMW International Open 2005 leaderboard. The Australian shares the joint lead (-12) at the halfway stage.
Rumford, who went into today’s second round as overnight co-leader, maintained his excellent form in Munich with a confident round of 67. It marks a dramatic change of fortune for the Perth pro, who has failed to make the cut in his last five PGA European Tour events.
“I have worked very hard the last few weeks and everything is falling into place now,” he said. “It’s only a result of hard work.”
Rumford, who teed off at 7:50 this morning, was glad for the early start: “The conditions were nice, the greens were perfect and I was looking to take advantage of that this morning,” he said. “I was focused on getting on to a good start and keeping the momentum going.”
He succeeded thanks to six fine birdies and only one bogey in Munich Nord-Eichenried. But despite sharing the lead into the weekend’s crucial final rounds, the 27-year old says he isn’t thinking about the €333,330 winner’s purse just yet.
“My goal is just to get myself in there on Sunday, and give myself a chance of winning.”
