Australia’s Karrie Webb has won her first tournament anywhere in more than twelve months and her first on the LPGA Tour since late March in 2009 by today winning the HSBC Women’s Champions event in Singapore today.
Webb started the final round one shot behind the Japanese golfer Chie Arimura and finished one shot ahead after a final round of 69. Two shots further back and alone in third position was the leading ranked golfer in women’s golf, Yani Tseng, who challenged early in her round before faltering over the closing nine holes.
Through ten holes Webb appeared to have lost her chance of victory as at that stage she had fallen three shots behind Arimura who appeared to have her first LPGA Tour title in her grasp.
Webb was, however, about to deliver a telling blow. She birdied her next four holes in succession and took the lead by two. A bogey at the 15th would make things interesting but when both players birdied the 16th there was still one shot in it with two to play.
Both players would par the final two holes however and the 36 year old Webb had won her 37th LPGA Tour title nearly 15 years after her first.
Tseng raced to the turn in 31 and at that stage appeared a genuine chance to win her fifth tournament of the year. It was however another great week for the 22 year old.
The next best of the Australians was Katherine Hull who finished 21st with Lindsey Wright 24th.
The next LPGA Tour event is not until the Founders Cup in Phoenix on March 16th.
