Giles amongst leaders in Bogota

BY Bruce Young | Nationwide Tour | 2011 Pacific Rubiales Bogota Open Presented by Samsung | Round One | 05 Mar 2011

The Pacific Rubiales Bogota Open Presented by Samsung has been badly disrupted by weather and through two days of the event at the Country Club of Bogota in Colombia there are still many players yet to even complete their opening round.

The only option and the best case scenario for the event now is to try and get 54 holes completed by Sunday afternoon and that will require players to complete their rounds as quickly as possible on Saturday morning and round two to get underway by 10.00am.

Those leading at 5 under 66 however include the former Sydney golfer Matthew Giles who, playing in just his third ever event on the Nationwide Tour and just his second as a professional, has made a promising start.

Giles, who won the World Junior Championship and attended the University of Southern California during his amateur career, finished 74th at last year’s PGA Tour School and thus has status on the Nationwide Tour in 2011. He missed the cut at last week’s Panama Open but has given a better indication of his capabilities already this week.

Giles leads with Garth Mulroy, local David Vanegas, and Americans Darron Stiles and J.J. Killeen.

Andrew Buckle is in 10th position at 3 under, two behind the lead although he has nine holes to play. Buckle finished 6th in this event last year and could continue his push towards the lead when the field return to the golf course on Saturday morning.

Won Joon Lee finished with a round of 69 to be in 18th position while Alistair Presnell has finished his round with 1 under 70 and David Lutterus also at 1 under through seven holes.
