Tasmania’s Ashlee Dewhurst has survived the closest of battles to win the Australian Women’s Amateur Championship at the Victoria Golf Club today, winning the event at the second extra hole over West Australian teenager Minjee Lee.
Dewhurst appeared to have blown a great opportunity to win the title when she bogeyed the 36th hole to allow Lee to draw level but both players birdied the first extra hole before Dewhurst sealed the deal with a birdie at the 38th hole.
Lee went one up with a birdie at the opening hole of the day this morning and it would take Dewhurst until the 33rd hole before she finally got ahead. But Lee was not done at that point. She won the 34th hole before Dewhurst birdied the 35th to take a one hole advantage to the par five last. A par there by the 14 year old Lee however was good enough for her to force the match into extra time.
Both players birdied the par five first extra hole before Dewhurst secured the title with a birdie at the second.
The 22 year old Dewhurst, a member of the Royal Hobart Golf Club, won the 2009 Riversdale Cup but this takes her standing in the game to another level completely. Dewhurst has a scholarship at the Tasmanian Institute of Sport.
Lee is a member of the Royal Freemantle Golf Club and last year became the youngest winner of the West Australian Women’s Amateur Championship. Clearly her time will come in future years.
