Laird takes Bay Hill lead

Scot Martin Laird leads the Arnold Palmer Invitational through 36 holes, the 28 year old from Glasgow, who played his collegiate golf at Colorado State, seeking his second USPGA Tour victory.

After a slow start in the tough conditions of day one at the Bay Hill Lodge near Orlando, Laird was much improved today with a round of 65 to be at 9 under and one ahead of Spencer Levin and K.J. Choi.

Laird has been in fine form in recent weeks finishing 3rd in Scottsdale, 10th at Doral and 5th last week at the transitions Championship. Twelve months ago Laird finished near last of those who made the cut in his first time to this event but he entered this week in much better form than was the case then and the results speak for themselves.

“The conditions went from being the hardest this course could play yesterday to the easiest today,” said Laird referring to the much improved weather conditions on day two.

Levin has also been in great form this season, missing only one cut in nine starts and being beaten in a playoff in Mexico. It is Levin’s first start in this event.

Most interest was on the performance of six time winner Tiger Woods who improved with a second round of 68 to be in 10th position at 3 under and six from the lead.

The leading Australians are Nick O’Hern and John Senden who share 25th position at 1 under.
