New Zealand golfer Danny Lee was disqualified from the Malaysian Open after finishing in a 13 way share of 17th in the event co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours.
Lee had been beginning to show progress with his game this season having made the cut in six of seven starts worldwide leading into the lucrative event held in Kuala Lumpur. He finished 7th in his previous event in Louisiana on the Nationwide Tour and appeared to be making further progress against what had been a strong field in Malaysia.
The mistake, reportedly for signing for an incorrect scorecard, cost Lee his share of the purse (€19,255).
Lee, currently ranked 535th in the world, continues to play the European Tour courtesy of his win at the 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth where, as an amateur at the age of 18, he defeated a high class field.
Lee is scheduled to tee it up at this week’s Volvo China Open in Chengdu.
