South Australia’s Gary Simpson posted a superb -6 (66) to take a one shot lead after the opening round of the $100,000 Karcher Spalding Victorian PGA Championship at the Kew Golf Club in Melbourne.
Simpson leads Victorians Paul Wright and Andrew Webster, who sit at -5 while Queenslanders Wayne Perske and Marcus Cain, Victorian David Diaz and Canberra’s Matthew Millar sit at -4 and in equal 4th place following rounds of 68. Diaz’s round was highlighted by a hole-in-one at the par 3 14th, the eighth of his career.
Wayne Grady wrapped up the first round with an Even par round of 72 and Peter Senior, who recently returned from Europe to show support for the Australasian PGA Tour by playing this week, posted a -2 (70). Scott Laycock, who finished in 60th place at the recent Amex Championship in Ireland, also closed with a -2 (70) along with veteran Peter McWhinney.
It was a disappointing start to the tournament for defending champion Nathan Gatehouse with the Tasmanian carding a 5 (77).
