Perez in front at Quail Hollow

It has been a roller coaster affair for Pat Perez to date on the 2011 PGA Tour and today it took another turn – this time for the better – when the 35 year old took the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Perez has missed the cut in nearly half the events he has played this season but there have also been some very good examples of the talent he is. Two weeks ago he finished 6th at the Heritage Classic and the week prior was 5th at the Texas Open. He did miss the cut last week at the Zurich Classic but was brilliant today.

Perez birdied five of his last six holes in today’s second round to lead by two over Bill Haas and Jonathan Byrd with Phil Mickelson and Lucas Glover one shot further back.

Mickelson appears to be warming to his task and with several big events just around the corner including the Players Championship, the Memorial and the tournament he probably wants to win the most, the US Open, he appears on track for a good month or two. It was his first start since a disappointing week at the Masters.

John Senden leads the Australians following his round of 64 which was the best of the day. Senden is in 12th position and six behind the lead of Perez.

Matt Jones, who finished 6th last week, and Steve Bowditch are in 20th position with Bowditch reversing some recent indifferent form with a round of 68.
