Donald moves closer to number one

The ultra consistent Luke Donald has moved past Martin Kaymer and into the second highest ranking in men’s golf behind Lee Westwood with yet another great week at the Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass.
England now holds the world number one and two positions in world golf which to my knowledge is the first occasion this has been the case.
For Donald his share of 4th this past week was his 13th top ten in his last 15 starts worldwide and as he wings his way to Casares in Andalucia in Spain for this week’s World Match Play Championship he could be forgiven for thinking this may well be the week he claims that number one mantle.
Also in the field in Spain is Westwood but as the recent Accenture Match Play Champion Donald is likely feeling good about his chances in this format.
With only one player (Phil Mickelson) missing from the world top five and all four of the current major champions playing participating this week, this event carries significant world ranking points.
Australia’s leading current world ranked player is Adam Scott at 19, Jason Day moves to his highest ever ranking in 20th position, Geoff Ogilvy is 29th, Robert Allenby 33rd and Aaron Baddeley into 50th position.
Baddeley will play in Spain this week and provided he remains inside the top 50 at week’s end (May 23rd) or alternatively inside the top 10 on the PGA Tour money list (he is currently 7th) then he is assured of a US Open start.
