The Volvo Match Play Championship being played at the Finca Cortesin Golf Club in Andalucia in Spain has reached the semi final stage and the possibility of a new world number one being crowned at week’s end has increased.

In one of the semi finals on Sunday morning Martin Kaymer will face off against Luke Donald ensuring one of the two hopefuls for Lee Westwood’s current position at the top of the game reaches the final on Sunday afternoon. If either were to go on and win then they would reach the top of the game, Donald for the first time, while for Kaymer he would regain the standing he enjoyed earlier in the season.

Kaymer secured his place in the semis by defeating Soren Kjeldsen in the round of 16, then Alvaro Quiros in the quarters, while Donald had a lucky escape against Johan Edfors in extra time before going on to defeat Charl Schwartzel in a quarter final that went the full distance.

In the other semi-final it will be surprise packet Nicolas Colsaerts taking on Ian Poulter. Poulter accounted for the current world number one Lee Westwood in a close fought morning match before again going to the final hole to defeat Francesco Molinari at the last in the afternoon.

Colsaerts defeated PGA Tour rookie Jhonattan Vegas by one hole in the morning then went on to defeat US Open Champion Graeme McDowell in the afternoon quarter final by 2&1.

Australian hope Aaron Baddeley was defeated in his morning match against Francesco Molinari. Baddeley went behind early and was never able to recover before eventually losing 4&3.

Baddeley will earn €90,000 for his troubles.
