Following the completion of the HSBC World Match Play Championship 2005 first round there are now just eight players left in the running for the Ł1million first prize.
Number one seed Retief Goosen was first to book his place in the second round with a convincing 8 & 7 triumph over England Kenneth Ferrie.
Equally impressive in their first round clashes were England’s Luke Donald who swept German veteran Bernhard Langer aside 7 & 6 while Ireland’s Paul McGinley upset Denmark’s former finalist Thomas Bjorn 6 & 5.
Elsewhere, Australia’s Steve Elkington also swept into the last eight with a 6 & 5 triumph over South Africa’s Tim Clark.
Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie disappointed his large following by succumbing to Australian Mark Hensby 2 & 1. Hensby’s reward for the win is a second round tie with Goosen.
Also in the next round go number two seed Angel Cabrera from Argentina who was a narrow 2 & 1 winnner against South Africa’s Trevor Immelman.
The final player to secure his passage was Spain’s Jose Marie Olazabal who edged out England’s David Howell on the final hole of their clash.
