LPGA plays its own Championship

The LPGA Tour this week plays its second major of 2011 when the Wegmans LPGA Championship takes to the fairways of the Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford in New York.

12 months ago Cristie Kerr simply blitzed the field in one of the elite events of the LPGA Tour winning by a massive 12 shots over Song Hee Kim with another two further shots back to Ai Miyazato and Jiyai Shin.

It is hard to imagine the world number two dominating the tournament to that extent again this year but coming off three consecutive second placed finishes it is hard to imagine she is not a great chance to win again.

All of the game’s elite are in the field, the leading player on this year’s money list Yani Tseng poised for her third victory of the year.

Australian Karrie Webb did well in this event last year when 5th albeit 14 shots behind the winner. Webb has played well enough this season for her to do even better in this event in 2011. Webb’s most recent form has not been great but she is a big event player and not without a chance of winning her second LPGA Championship.

Karrie will be joined in the field by other Australians, Katherine Hull, Lindsey Wright, Sarah Kemp and Sarah Jane Smith with Alison Whitaker an outside chance of a start from the reserve bench.
