Jacobson breaks through at Travelers

Fredrik Jacobson today broke through for his first PGA tour victory nearly eight years after first joining that Tour full time in 2004. His one shot victory at the Travelers Championship just outside of Hartford goes alongside his three European Tour victories earlier in his career, the last of which came in 2003.

Jacobson’s two shot victory over John Rollins and the luckless Ryan Moore continued what had been a good week for the Swede at last week’s US Open where through 63 holes he was in second position and McIlory’s nearest chaser. He eventually finished 14th but the signs were there for a big week not being too far away.

Moore today joined Jacobson in the lead when he birdied the par three 16th from 12 feet but then bogeyed the last leaving the stage to Jacobson in the group behind. Jacobson two putted from 15 feet for his par at the final hole for par and the one shot victory.

Michael Thompson closed with a final round of 62 which interestingly had included a bogey at the first to finish alone in 4th position. Thompson, a 26 year old from Alabama, is a graduate from the 2010 Hooters Tour and is playing his first full PGA Tour season. He had missed the cut in five of his last six starts this season leading into this week’s event so this was a big day and a big week for the 26 year old.

While Thompson’s last round was impressive the talk of much of the early part of the week had been on the second round of 60 by amateur Patrick Cantlay who had finished as the leading amateur in last week’s US Open. Cantlay eventually finished 24th but led through 36 holes of this event and is clearly a star in the making.

Aaron Baddeley was the best of the Australians in what was an ordinary week for them given that only two made the cut. Baddeley finished 24th and Aron Price 52nd.

The PGA Tour will now move back south to Pennsylvania for this week’s AT&T National Championship.
