Kennedy gains Open start

BY Bruce Young | Japan Tour | 2011 Mizuno Open Yomiuri Classic | Wrap | 27 Jun 2011

Contrary to my earlier report, Queensland golfer Brad Kennedy has earned the right to play the Open Championship at Royal St Georges next month.

Kennedy finished in 5th position at last week’s Mizuno Open on the Japan Golf Tour and the leading four players not otherwise exempt each earn a place in the Open Championship field.

The confusion came from me believing that only the top four would be included but only if they were not already exempt. It was of course the leading four non-exempt players.

Ryo Ishikawa and Kim Kyung-tae were both already exempt and so the list went on down to involve not only Kennedy but also Prayad Marksaeng in addition to tournament winner Jung-Gong Hwan and fourth placed Sang-Moon Bae.

It will be Kennedy’s first Open Championship start and his first start in a major.

Apologies to those kind folk who pointed out our mistake and kept us on our toes!!
