Three of Australia’s top international players Robert Allenby, Mark Hensby and Peter Lonard, have committed to play the 2005 Cadbury Schweppes Australian PGA Championship in December.

“The Cadbury Schweppes Australian PGA Championship celebrates its Centenary this year so it’s pleasing to see our top Australian players coming out in force to support the event,” said Queensland Premier Peter Beattie.

“The Queensland Government, through Queensland Events, is proud to support this championship and delighted the Sunshine Coast venue will be seen by millions of people around the world.”

Defending champion and a winner on the US PGA Tour this year, Peter Lonard will return to Coolum on the Sunshine Coast in a bid to win back-to-back titles and add the Centenary PGA title to his Centenary Open title. A prolific winner on home soil, 38th world ranked Lonard will be hoping to add to his solid international performances and claim the PGA Championship for a third time.

Also vying for the hat-trick will be Victorian Robert Allenby. Allenby claimed back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2001 when the Championship was played at Royal Queensland Golf Club in Brisbane. This will be Allenby’s first appearance at Hyatt Coolum since playing in the Schweppes Coolum Classic in the 90’s.

An infrequent visitor to the Australasian Tour since his emergence on the world golfing scene, Mark Hensby’s appearance will be much anticipated by local golfing fans hoping to get an up-close glimpse of one of Australia’s best-performed golfers of the past two years.

The 34-year-old Hensby has enjoyed an outstanding year in events around the globe chalking up an impressive record in the major championships, while in taking out the Scandinavian Masters in July, successfully claimed his first European Tour title.

Adding to the positive news that Hensby, Lonard and Allenby have committed to play at Coolum this year, PGA Australia also recently announced a 20 per cent increase in prizemoney taking the total purse to a lucrative $1,200,000.

The Cadbury Schweppes Australian PGA Championship will be played 1-4 December at the Hyatt Regency Coolum on the Sunshine Coast.
