Ogilvy shows improvement in Canada

Chad Campbell and Michael Thompson lead the RBC Canadian Open at the completion of the opening 36 holes at the demanding Shaughnessy Golf club in Vancouver, their score of just 4 under par a reflection on just how tough this layout has proven.
Campbell is currently 132nd in world ranking but his great effort last week when 5th at the Open Championship has obviously allowed him to carry some confidence into this week. He was delighted with his start and is enjoying the demanding layout.
“A lot of guys told me it was a great golf course and that I’d probably like it. They’re right. I think it’s a great golf course. It’s tough, but it’s fair.”
The 26 year old Thompson is even further down the world ranking (280) but is in just his rookie season on the PGA Tour and has done well enough in making more cuts than he has missed including when finishing 4th at the Travelers Championship.
Thompson is beginning to adapt to the PGA Tour. Yeah, this is my fifth tournament in a row, and currently the best stretch I’ve played all year. I got off to a rough start kind of getting used to the PGA TOUR and the lifestyle and the people at each event. I’m trying to find my own place. In the last few months I’ve really begun to find my comfort zone, so to speak.
“My breakthrough tournament was actually the Travelers Championship in Hartford. I finished fourth. Shot a final round 62 and vaulted up the leaderboard, which really gave me a lot of confidence, especially being my fifth cut made in a row, that’s really big for me as well.
The pair leads by one over veterans Lee Janzen and Paul Goydos with Geoff Ogilvy, Rickie Fowler and Charl Schwartzel amongst a group just one further back.
Ogilvy has had a horror run since his 4th place finish at Augusta National and appears to have found something. He needs to as his position in the Presidents Cup standings is precarious and a few good finishes from this point on will play a key role in either his qualifying for, or his selection in, the International side.
Aron Price and Jarrod Lyle are the next best of the Australians in a share of 12th position but just three from the lead.
Greg Chalmers at 2 over, Peter Lonard at 3 over and Nathan Green at 4 over were the other Australians to make it to the weekend. For Lonard, who is playing here because of his top ten last week in Mississippi, it is a further indication he is on the way back.
