New Zealand’s only International Golf Tournament of the summer, the 2006 ING NZ PGA Championship, will be hosted by Christchurch’s Clearwater Golf Club between February 23-26, with a prize-purse of $US600,000.
The ING NZ PGA Championship, co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and the US Nationwide Tour will again attract the cream of New Zealand and Australia’s talent, as well as seventy-eight high quality American Professionals.
Andrew Georgiou, Chief Executive of the PGA Tour of Australasia said that the event has become a major vehicle in allowing players on the Australasian Tour to break on to the competitive US TOUR, therefore creating more opportunities for Australasia’s up and coming golfers.
“The INZ PGA Championship has been one avenue in which our players can get a foot in the door on the tough US TOUR and has uncovered some wonderful Australasian talent. As one of two Nationwide Tour co-sanctioned events to be held in the region it plays a big role in creating those opportunities for our golfers and always provides exciting top quality competition.”
Who could forget the exciting climax to last year’s event as Australians Peter O’Malley and Steven Bowditch went down to the wire, with O’Malley finally sinking an 18 foot putt for birdie on the fourth playoff hole to take the title.
Additionally, with the recent success of Michael Campbell in winning the US Open, the awareness of golf in New Zealand has never been higher.
The 2006 event will be the third since the NZ PGA Championship was re-introduced after an absence of 17 years and also the third year of ING’s sponsorship.
The Mayor of Christchurch, Gary Moore, said the Championship was a major plus to both Christchurch and New Zealand, on two counts.
“It is not often we get to see truly world class sports people in this country, but the ING NZ PGA Championship gives us that opportunity and the International exposure generated via television for the City of Christchurch and New Zealand is amazing”.
Richard Ellis, President of the PGA of New Zealand, said “the support of the City of Christchurch must be commended and the PGA of New Zealand is pleased to be a part of the success story of the ING NZ PGA Championship, as apart from international exposure gained the ING NZ PGA Championship injects millions of dollars into the local and national economy annually”.
