Siem continues good day for Germany

The Irish Open Presented by Discover Ireland has reached its halfway stage and there are already a few surprises and disappointments.

Germany’s Marcel Siem continued a good day for German golf with countrywoman Caroline Masson also leading the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Carnoustie in Scotland at the halfway stage.

Siem’s second consecutive 66 has given him a one shot lead over Soren Hansen and Jeev Milkha Singh with Ignacio Garrido one shot further back.

Simon Dyson continued his good form in 2011 to be in a share of 5th with the defending champion Ross Fisher, Oliver Wilson, Simon Wakefield, Raphael Jacquelin and Richard Green.

A late eagle and birdie gave Siem the edge leaving his run until late in the day having started his second round at 3.10pm. The late tee off did not faze the 31 year old however.

“It’s a great venue here and I love that golf course, and the crowds we had here the first two rounds are perfect. We have that every week, it would be great. Once you start, it’s always something special, and we only have the Open and Wentworth, and it’s good. Luckily I have a late tee time tomorrow, so I’m okay with 8.00 coming off the golf course.”

Most of the talk this week has been on the appearance of Irish greats Rory McIlory, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington and Open Champion Darren Clarke.

Clarke and Harrington will not be around for the weekend however although McIlory and McDowell both improved on day two with rounds of 68 and 66 respectively to be in a share of 25th at 4 under and six from Siem’s lead.

Green leads the Australasians in 5th position and is well placed to equal or better his good showing in this event last year when he finished 5th.

New Zealander Mark Brown has missed 9 of his last 11 cuts on the European Tour but today he was much better, his round of 67 moving him to 25th position.

Marcus Fraser was the only other Australasian to make the cut in 45th position.
