Dyson edges Green at Irish Open

England’s Simon Dyson survived a tough final round battle with Australia’s Richard Green to win the Irish Open presented by Discover Ireland at the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and secure his 5th European Tour title.
Not that his opposition was restricted to Green but the pair edged clear of a congested leaderboard with a few holes to go. Dyson, who was playing ahead of Green, drew level with the long time leader at the 17th but then missed an opportunity for birdie at the last.
A few minutes later however Green, who was playing in the final group with David Howell, three putted from long range and the title was Dyson’s without the need for a playoff.
Dyson has not won this season but there have been five top ten’s to date including a last start 9th at the Open Championship after a late call up to that event. The victory will guarantee him a start at next week’s World Golf Championship event in Ohio and should move him well inside the top 50 in the world from his current 67th.
It was agony for Green after leading the event for so long and holding off so many challengers on the final day. A victory would have put his name right in front of Greg Norman for International Team Presidents Cup selection but he still has this week’s World golf Championship event and the PGA Championship the week following to play his way into calculations.
Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher finished alone in third position with Challenge Tour graduate Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger. It (€75,000) was Wisberger’s biggest cheque in golf.
The next best of the Australasians after Green was New Zealander Mark Brown who reversed a horror run of nine missed cuts in his last eleven starts by finishing in a share of 11th with Marcus Fraser recovering from last round of 85 in Sweden last week to finish 25th.
The European Tour now heads to Ohio for the WGC Bridgestone event there followed by the PGA Championship in Atlanta
