Course specialists lead Reno Tahoe Open

The power of golf course familiarity and comfort zones is seldom better illustrated than it has been at this week’s Reno Tahoe Open in Nevada.
Two time winner of the event in 2004 and 2005, Vaughn Taylor, leads the field into the weekend, his second round of 66 giving him a one shot lead over yet another former winner in Will MacKenzie.
Taylor has yet to record a top ten this season and has missed his last three cuts but back on a golf course on which he has recorded so much success he is in his element.
Mackenzie too has struggled this year finishing no better than 30th in ten outings on the PGA Tour but the 2006 winner is clearly at home on the Montreaux Golf Club’s layout.
Australia’s Nick O’Hern, Hunter Haas and Steve Flesch are one shot further back with Steve Elkington and Rod Pampling also very much within striking distance of the leader at 6 under par and just three from the lead.
O’Hern talked about specific goals following his round. “My biggest goal is kind of to win this tournament and get into the PGA next week. You know, just one step at a time basically. I’ve got some good form behind me. I don’t think I’m too far back going into the weekend, and I would love to pull this one out.”
