The 111th United States Women’s Amateur Championship begins on Monday 8th of August at the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington in Rhode Island.
This will be the fourth occasion that this event has been played at the layout located alongside Narragansett Bay just south of Providence.
156 players have made the field but that number will be reduced to the leading 64 after just 36 holes, those successful entering the match play phase over five days, the winner needing to win six matches to secure the most signficant title in women’s amateur golf.
The 2010 winner Danielle Kang returns to defend the title she won when defeating Jessica Korda by 2&1.
Three Australasians have made the field. The world number one ranked amateur Lydia Ko of New Zealand was forced to qualify but she gets the opportunity to establish further bona fide to her ranking by either winning or playing well this week.
Australians Breanna Elliott and Emma de Groot have also survived the rigorous qualifying process and will tee it up in round one.
