Furyk in the hunt for fourth title
BY iseekgolf.com | US PGA Tour | 2002 Invensys Classic at Las Vegas | Round Three | 12 Oct 2002
Three time winner of the Invensys Classic, Jim Furyk, further increased his chances of a fourth title following a round of -8 (64) today at the TPC at Summerlin in Nevada. Furyk had yet to card a bogey after two rounds and today was no exception, coming down the back nine with four birdies in a row from the 13th to the 16th hole.
Overnight co-leader Charles Howell slipped back to equal third place alongside Stuart Appleby, despite posting a healthy -5 (66) and will go into the weekend just three strokes off the pace. Jeff Sluman fired a third round 64 to overtake Howell and close the day in outright second place at -19.
Stuart Appleby moved to the top of the ANZ leaderboard at -17 following a bogey-free -8 (64) at the Southern Highlands GC. Appleby is three strokes back from Furyk and looks to be a chance at the title if he can continue to play like he did today. Kiwi Phil Tataurangi is two strokes adrift of Appleby at -15 after posting a 67. Steve Allen (T29), Craig Parry (T38) and Robert Allenby were the only others to make the cut.
With two rounds of golf still to be played and seventeen players within five strokes of the lead, the tournament is still very much anyone’s for the taking.
