32 year old Scott Piercy has broken through for his first win on the PGA Tour with a one shot victory over Pat Perez at the Reno Tahoe Open in Reno in Nevada.
Piercy, whose best previous finish in his 3 year PGA Tour career had been when 5th at the 2009 Honda Classic, began the day with a two shot lead over Josh Teater after his brilliant 61 in round three had given him that cushion.
The third round had also given Piercy a share of the all time consecutive birdie equaling record on the PGA Tour of eight in a row between his 2nd and 9th holes.
By the turn on Saturday Piercy was steering in the face of a sub 60 round but although the momentum slowed it was good enough to have given him the lead which he was able to convert into victory.
Piercy added three birdies through his opening nine holes today and then held off a strong late challenge from the runner-up, Perez eventually costing himself a chance of a playoff with a bogey at the 17th.
Nick O’Hern and Steve Elkington finished as the leading Australians in 6th position, O’Hern not doing quite enough to earn a start at this week’s PGA Championship but Steve Elkington playing himself into form for one of his favourite events.
