The 34th Gary Player Classic concluded at Pacific Golf Club earlier today, and saw two of Queensland golf’s bright young prospects in Eagle Chang (15 Years & Under) and Jason Day (16-17 Years) successfully defend their respective age groups.

The Colts category (for players aged 18-20) was taken out by Indooroopilly’s Ben Pisani, who overtook local overnight leader Kurt Carslon over the last nine holes. Pisani’s club-mate Rika Batibasaga, the current Fiji Open Champion, was second in this category.

Day’s rounds of 67-70-71-70 totalled 10-under-par (278) and was the best aggregate across all three age groups.

Day and Chang join Greg Norman, Peter Senior, Stephen Taylor (twice), Matthew King, Richard Backwell, Shane Tait, Luke Parkin, Andrew Buckle and Tom Davis as the only players to have defended an age-group title in the Gary Player Classic.

Day also became one of only a few players to have won three titles, having also won the 15 Years and Under division in 2002.

Day was never troubled, and moved to six under for the day through 12 holes, before dropping a stroke at 16, and taking a triple bogey 6 on 17. He eventually won the 16-17 Years trophy by seven shots from Adam Downton.

Eagle Chang played steadily, while his challengers were unable to apply any pressure.
