Mallinger leads Goggin improves

PGA Tour player John Mallinger, without a start in the FedEx Cup playoffs, leads the Nationwide Tour’s News Sentinel Presented by Pilot in Farragut in Tennessee, rounds of 63 and 65 having him at 16 under par at the completion of 36 holes.

Mallinger leads by two over Garrett Willis and by three over Kirk Triplett, Willis and Triplett former PGA Tour event winners.

Mallinger has had a horror year in 2011 although a much better week last week in Greensboro, a course on which he has played well previously, suggested that he was turning things around.

Mathew Goggin, chasing a his third win of the season and an immediate return to the PGA Tour for the Fall Series leads the Australians after he improved with a second round of 63 to be in a share of 10th position albeit six shots behind Mallinger.

Two double bogeys in round one have been costly for Goggin but given the level of confidence with which he is playing at present a win is still not out of the question.

Last week’s winner, James Nitties, is in 14th position and seven from the lead, a position he shares with yet another player from the Newcastle region of NSW, Nathan Green. Like Mallinger, Green is in the field to have his game sharp for the all important Fall Series where he needs to play well to retain his PGA Tour status.

Andrew Buckle is one shot further back.
