Tight leaderboard at European Masters

There is a four way tie at the top of the leader-board at the end of day two of the Omega European Masters in Crans sur Sierre in Switzerland but all three of the pre tournament favourites, Rory McIlory, Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood are either in or close enough to the lead to warm the hearts of tournament organisers.

McIlory has returned to tournament golf after the concerning injury at the PGA Championship in Atlanta three weeks ago but despite a double bogey at his 9th hole today was able to put together a round of 69 to share the lead with Simon Dyson, Gary Boyd and Jamie Donaldson.

That quartet leads by one over a group of five players which includes Martin Kaymer and by two over a group of nine players which includes Lee Westwood. Eighteen players are therefore within two shots of the lead, many of them either highly credentialed in terms of world ranking or in good form at present.

McIlory is playing his first event since the injury he incurred when he hit a tree root in a follow through during the opening round of the PGA Championship.

Kaymer led with just a few holes to go in his second round today but double bogeyed the par three 16th to be just one shot off the pace.

The leading Australasian is Michael Campbell who at 4 under is just four from the lead. Campbell has shown the occasional glimpses of his capabilities this season but there has been little to show for his efforts in terms of results. Now in a country that will reportedly become his residence before too long he has made an encouraging start.

Former winner, Brett Rumford, is at 3 under and in a share of 39th while Mark Brown just made the cut in 52nd position. For both Brown and Rumford it is only the second cut they have made in their last nine and ten appearances respectively.
