Simon Dyson became the toast of the Netherlands today by winning his third KLM Open in the last six years although his first at the Hilversumche Golf Club in Hilversum.
Dyson continued an outstanding season as this victory followed his win at the Irish Open six weeks ago and his sterling finish at the Open Championship where he recorded his best finish in a major championship.
The victory will move Dyson well inside the top fifty from his current 54th position in the World Ranking and the doors continue to open for the 33 year old from Manchester.
Dyson was forced to come from behind today to defeat spirited challenges from Scotland’s Gary Orr, England’s David Lynn and the US Open Champion Rory McIlory.
Dyson needed four birdies in his last seven holes to overcome Lynn while Orr bogeyed the final hole to miss an opportunity to win his first European Tour event in eleven years.
McIlory finished third and Orr 4th.
McIlory, Lynn and Orr shared the lead early in the round after Orr and South African James Kingston had started the final day with a two shot lead. Lynn went ahead when he eagled the 11th but he could not hold off the strong finish by the winner.
Lee Westwood finished alone in 5th position.
McIlory’s third place finish will move him back to the world number three position behind Luke Donald and Westwood.
The only Australasian to make the cut was Brett Rumford who finished 43rd.
The European Tour now plays their biennial encounter between Continental Europe and Great Britain and Ireland in Paris.
