Tseng fights back to defend in Arkansas

Yani Tseng has successfully defended her Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, the world number one coming from behind over the closing stages of regulation play to force a playoff and defeat Korea’s Amy Yang.

Yang was chasing her first LPGA Tour victory and broke clear in the final round to lead by two before Tseng clawed her way back. Tseng then birdied the first extra hole in a playoff against Yang to win her fifth LPGA Tour title of the season and her 7th overall having won the Australian Open and the ANZ Ladies Masters while in Australia earlier in the year.

Tseng further cements her position at the top of the women’s game having gained the mantle of the world number one when winning on the Gold Coast of Australia in February.

Yang earns a cheque for US$182,000 but she will be frustrated by not converting the opportunity for the breakthrough win.

Ai Miyazato finished in third position just one shot out of the playoff.

Sarah Jane Smith finished as the leading Australian in 48th position while Lindsey Wright was 55th and Karrie Webb was 76th.

The LPGA plays one more event in the US, the Navistar Classic in Alabama before those involved play the Solheim Cup in Ireland in two weeks time. The LPGA Tour then plays five events in Asia before returning to Mexico then Florida.
