Nationwide Tour winds down

BY Bruce Young | Nationwide Tour | 2011 WNB Golf Classic | Preview | 28 Sep 2011

The WNB Golf Classic in Midland, Texas, is the fifth to last event on this year’s Nationwide Tour schedule and as the season ending Tour Championship in late October looms there is still much work to do for many of the large Australasian contingent who ply their trade on that Tour.

Only Mathew Goggin and, most likely, Danny Lee are assured of retaining their place inside the all important top 25 by season’s end.

James Nitties in 19th position is also inside the top 25 but he is likely to need another $15,000 to $20,000 or so it would seem just to be sure.

Last week Danny Lee recorded an opening round of 69 only to be disqualified from the second round after he had unofficially withdrawn. He was suffering from a wrist injury during round two and made the decision himself to withdraw but because he had not followed the procedure deemed appropriate he was disqualified. The nett result was the same but withdrawing always looks better than DQ’d

Fortunately for Lee he did not lose any ground on the money list and remains in 14th position.

The Midland Country Club has been good to Australians over the years with Marc Leishman winning by a record breaking 11 shots in 2008, Alistair Presnell finishing runner-up last year and Mark Hensby was runner-up on two occasions prior to him joining the PGA Tour.

Sixteen Australasians are in the field and in tee off order are; Steve Dartnall, James Nitties, Tim Wilkinson, Gavin Coles, Danny Lee, Jake Younan-Wise, Mark Hensby, Alistair Presnell, Cameron Percy, Josh Geary, Adam Bland, Terry Pilkadaris, Stuart Deane, Bradley Iles, Peter Lonard and David Lutterus.
