LPGA Tour begins Asian swing in Korea

BY Bruce Young | LPGA Tour | 2011 Hana Bank Championship | Preview | 05 Oct 2011

The LPGA Tour this week plays the first of four events in the Asian region, the first of them being the LPGA Hana Bank Championship at the Sky 72 Golf Club’s Ocean Course in Incheon near Seoul.

The winner of this event in each of the last two years, Na Yeon Choi, has played well enough in recent starts for her to be a great chance to three-peat. Choi has not won on the LPGA Tour this season but just a few weeks ago won in Korea and just last week finished runner-up in another Korean event.

Choi is therefore the hottest player in the field and as a two time winner deserves favouritism even ahead of the world number one, Yani Tseng.

Tseng did not play this event in 2010 but in 2009 she finished runner-up to Choi and might again be the Korean’s nearest pursuer.

Another Korean of interest will be the US Open Champion So Yeon Ryu who has played only one LPGA Tour event since but has continued to play well in Korean Tour events. She has not played this event all that well in recent times but she is a significantly more credentialed now.

In this restricted field only two Australians have a start namely Karrie Webb and Katherine Hull.
