Things get tense on Nationwide Tour

With only two events left on the 2011 Nationwide Tour before the season ending Tour Championship the next two weeks could well become crucial for many players attempting to reach various money list milestones in their chase for higher honours in professional golf.

This week’s Miccosukee Championship in Miami is the first of two events in Florida before the season ending finale in South Carolina.

The Mark Mahannah designed Miccosukee Golf and Country Club has played host to this event since 2003, one of the winners during that time last week’s winner on the PGA Tour, Bryce Molder.

Jason Gore, a seven time winner on the Nationwide Tour, is the defending champion. Despite winning the event last year, Gore was still required to go to the PGA Tour School last where he finished an agonising 41st. He has played very little in 2011 and his chances of a repeat win appear remote although his form leading into last year’s event was similar.

Seventeen Australasians are in this week’s field with all but Matthew Goggin, Danny Lee and perhaps James Nitties assured of a PGA Tour card in 2012. Goggin and Nitties will play but Lee is not in the field.

Nitties finished 44th last week but retained his 19th position on the money list and another made cut should be enough for him to be safe in his quest to return to the PGA Tour.

Andrew Buckle, Won Joon Lee, Scott Gardiner, Josh Geary, Matthew Giles, Bradley Iles, Peter Lonard, Alistair Presnell, Steven Dartnall, Jake Younan-Wise, Nick Flanagan, Gavin Coles, Cameron Percy, Tim Wilkinson and Adam Bland will also tee it up.

Percy was the joint leading Australian in last week’s PGA Tour event in California.
