Amateur star Matsuyama wins in Japan

19 year old amateur, Hideki Matsuyama, has today staged a significant upset although one that might well herald the arrival of one of the game’s new stars.
To some extent Matsumaya has already arrived having played the Masters this year as the winner of the Asian Amateur in 2010 and when he did so he led the amateurs in the event.
Today, however, Matsuyama won the Japan Golf Tour’s Visa Taiheiyo Masters in a weather reduced version of the event in Gotemba at the base of Mt Fuji. An eagle at the final hole in his round of 68 secured the two shot victory over Toru Taniguchi.
The tournament was reduced to 54 holes after Friday’s second round was washed out halfway through the day.
Charl Schwartzel, en route to a start at the Presidents Cup, was one of five players who shared 3rd position, the leading money winner on the Japan Tour, Sang Bae Moon, another to share that position.
Matsuyama is from Sendai which earlier this year was hit by the earthquake and Tsunami
Defending champion, Ryo Ishikawa, finished in a share of 9th his final round of 67 a good way to head for Royal Melbourne as part of the Presidents Cup International side.
Brendan Jones was the leading Australian finishing in a share of 10th position thanks in the main to his superb last round of 66, the equal best of the day.
