Hillier wins Lake Macquarie by seven

West Australian Whitney Hillier has confirmed her ongoing return to big time golf with an emphatic victory at the Lake Macquarie Women’s Amateur Championship at the Belmont Golf Club south of Newcastle today.

The 21 year old led by nine heading into the final round over Breanna Elliott but although the runner-up produced the best round of the day (73) it was always a bridge too far in terms of staging a serious challenge to the eventual winner.

Hillier’s final round of 75 in what were good conditions on the final day was still good enough for a seven shot victory over Yarrawonga’s Elliott with Elliott’s fellow Victorian Tilly Poulson a further four shots back in third position.

The former Australian Girls Champion, Hillier, has bounced back from a career threatening wrist injury which kept her out of the game for 14 months during 2010 and 2011 but she has this week highlighted just what a talent she is.

The Lake Macquarie Men’s Championship begins on January 26th at the Belmont Golf Club.
