Winners and losers at Australian Amateur

The opening round of match play at the Australian Men’s and Women’s Amateur Championships has been completed at the Woodlands Golf Club in Melbourne with perhaps the biggest upset of the day being the elimination of the 2011 Women’s Champion, Ashlee Dewhurst of Tasmania, who lost her opening encounter to Royal Queensland golfer Christina Mews.

Another surprise first round casualty was classy New Zealander, Cecilia Cho, who went down to Victorian Montana Strauss.

Some of those who were expected to win did however with the world’s leading female amateur and New Zealander, Lydia Ko, getting through, as did last week’s Lake Macquarie Amateur Champion, Whitney Hillier, who just scrapped through after a playoff with Reanna Matthews from Victoria, leading qualifier Breanna Elliott, standout Victorian junior Su Hyun Oh and last year’s runner-up Minjee Lee of WA.

The leading qualifier amongst the men, Cameron Smith of Queensland, secured his place in the second round with a 4&3 win over Chris Winkler of Victoria.

Others to make it through amongst the men included Matt Stieger, Nathan Holman, Ted Sinnott and New Zealander Ben Campbell who has been runner-up in this event in each of the last two years.

Surprise losers amongst the men included Jake Higginbottom, Ryan McCarthy, Oliver Goss and talented junior Anthony Murdaca.

Both titles will be completed over the next few days at the Woodlands Golf Club.
