The finalists for tomorrow’s Men’s and Women’s Australian Amateur Championships have been decided following the quarter and semi finals today.

Victorian Breanna Elliott will face the 14 year old world number one amateur, Lydia Ko of New Zealand, in the Women’s Championship and Queenslander Daniel Nisbet will tackle Germany’s Marcel Schneider in the men’s final.

Elliott defeated West Australian Whitney Hillier in this afternoon’s semi final by the convincing margin of 5&4 after defeating Victoria’s Grace Lennon in the morning quarter final.

Ko was facing defeat in this morning’s quarter final match against the Victorian Tilley Poulson before a remarkable comeback with birdies on six of her last eight holes to win at the 20th. Ko then went on to defeat last year’s runner-up Minjee Lee in this afternoon’s semi final by 6&4.

Ko is looking to add the Australian Amateur Championship to the New Zealand Amateur she won in Christchurch last year. She is also the current Australian Strokeplay Champion.

Nisbet came from several holes down in his morning quarter final match against fellow Queenslander Christopher-John Harrop to win in extra time and in his afternoon match he comfortably accounted for the New South Welshman Jordan Zunic

Schneider defeated NSW’s Ricky Kato 5&3 in the morning quarter final then was forced to the 21st hole in the afternoon semi-final before defeating another from NSW in Ruben Sondjaja.

21 year old Schneider, a former Austrian Amateur Champion and runner-up at the German Amateur Championship, will take on Caboolture’s Nisbet who has fought his way back from an 18 month ban imposed on him for the possession of a prohibited substance on arrival into Brisbane in mid 2009.

Nisbet is a former Australian Junior Champion.

Both finals will be played over 36 holes at the Woodlands Golf Club’s layout in Mordialloc in Melbourne.
