24 year old Kyle Stanley, in his second season on the PGA Tour, leads at the halfway mark of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.
Even a double bogey early in his round today was not enough to stop Stanley enhancing his opening round score of 10 under 62 with a round of 4 under to be at 14 under and he leads by one over Brandt Snedeker.
One shot further back in a share of third are Korean rookie Sang-Moon Bae and second season player Martin Flores.
Stanley was a standout amateur during his time at the University of Clemson and joined the PGA Tour after a year on the Nationwide Tour in 2010. He has already established his credentials at this higher level with a fine opening season with a runner-up finish at the John Deere Classic and three other top tens.
Stanley had a good week at the Sony Open but then missed the cut last week in at the Humana Challenge but, the double bogey aside, this has been a great start.
Snedeker has a good record at this venue having recorded a runner-up finish a third place finish and one other top ten in five starts. Snedeker recorded a round of 64 today although he did play the easier North Course in round two.
Flores birdied eight holes in succession between the end of his opening round and the early stages of today’s second round in fact he birdied 9 out of ten holes in that stretch.
Bae is in his first PGA Tour season having earned his card at the Tour School last year. A standout on the Japan Golf Tour where his victories have included the Japan Open in 2011, Bae appears as a player eventually capable of following in the footsteps of K.J. Choi and Y.E. Yang.
Robert Allenby leads the Australians in a share of 7th position after his round of 67 on the more demanding South Course left him five shots from Stanley.
Greg Chalmers is next best in 12th position at 7 under and seven from the lead.
