Queenslander Daniel Nisbet has today won the Lake Macquarie International Amateur Championship at the Belmont Golf Club near Newcastle, his final round of 71 securing him a three shot victory over his fellow Queenslander Cameron Smith.
Nisbet, who has been runner-up at the Australian Master of the Amateurs and at the Australian Amateur Championship over the past two weeks, finally claimed redemption on a day where he was forced to come from behind the 54 hole leader and the man who defeated him last week, Marcel Schneider, to win.
Schneider fell away in the final round with a six over par round of 78 although the strong north easterly conditions on the final day would mean scoring overall was difficult. Schneider would finish 5th.
Smith, the current Australian Strokeplay Champion, was one of only a few players to break 70 today, his round of 69 moving him from his share of 9th to outright second.
Local golfer, Callan O’Reilly, from the Toronto Golf Club, shared 4th position with Germany’s Sebastien Kannler.
Nisbet will now play this coming’s week’s NSW Amateur Championship followed by the Riversdale Cup in Victoria in mid February.
Most of this week’s field will now head south to the northern beaches of Sydney where they will play the NSW Medal and Amateur Championships to be staged at the Long Reef and Mona Vale Golf Clubs (Medal) and the Elanora Country Club (NSW Amateur).
