Wi has three shot lead at AT&T

Charlie Wi, playing the Pebble Beach Links layout on day two of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro Am, put together a rollercoaster round of 69 to take a three shot lead into tomorrow’s third round.

Wi still has the more difficult Spyglass Hills layout to play in round three but he has established an important break as he chases his first victory on the PGA Tour.

Wi was one of the joint leaders after yesterday’s opening round but an early bogey gave little clue of what was about to come. At the par four 13th he holed his second from 114 yards and then added another five birdies and three bogies. The bogey at the last was disappointing but as it turned out it was a good bogey save after missing the green with his second and third.

Wi leads by three over two time champion, Dustin Johnson, with PGA Tour rookie, Danny Lee, Brian Gay and a resurgent Vijay Singh and Padraig Harrington in a share of third position, four from the lead.

Phil Mickelson bounced back into calculations with a round of 65 at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club to move into a share of 8th position at 7 under while Tiger Woods is one shot further back and six shots from the lead.

After his brilliant start yesterday when recording a round of 63 at Pebble Beach, New Zealander, Lee, found the Spyglass Hills a little more testing. He bogeyed two holes late in his round which was no doubt frustrating for him but in just his 4th event as a PGA Tour cardholder, three of in which he has missed the cut, it is an encouraging start for the 21 year old former US Amateur Champion.

Aaron Baddeley and Steven Bowditch are the best of the Australians in 28th position at 4 under and although eight shots from Wi they are just five shots out of second position.

The cut for the final round will be made at the completion of the third round tomorrow with the tournament reverting to the Pebble Beach Links for the final day.
