Former winners lead in Dubai

The Omega Dubai Desert Classic is at the halfway mark and two former winners are atop the leaderboard.

Thomas Bjorn and Rory McIlory lead at 13 under one shot ahead of opening round leader, Rafael Cabrera Bello with Martin Kaymer, Gregory Bourdy and Scott Jamieson next in a share of third position and one shot further back.

Lee Westwood is also within striking distance and 10 under par and just three from the lead.

Bjorn won this event in 2001 while for McIlory his victory came just three years ago when winning his first European Tour event. Both recorded the same opening two rounds their bogey free rounds of 65 on day two moving them to the top of the heap.

Kaymer’s round was highlighted by the first hole in one of his professional career when he aced the 7th hole en route to a round of 67.

McIlory enjoyed what he described as a stress free round. “I was never really under any pressure early in the round, he said. “I just got off to a much better start today and made a couple of birdies early on. And it was nice just to sort of pick up birdies along the way instead of yesterday having to sort light it up on the back nine to shoot a score.

“This was very stress-free golf, fairways most of the time, a lot of greens and giving myself a lot of looks. So overall I’m really pleased with how I played today and obviously looking forward to the weekend.”

The leading Australian at present is Brett Rumford in 39th position at 3 under and ten shots from the leaders.
