Rafael Cabrera Bello is the Omega Dubai Desert Classic Champion, his bogey free final round of 68 at the Emirates Golf Club enough to get him home by one over Scot Stephen Gallacher and world number three Lee Westwood.
Germany’s Marcel Siem was two shots further back in 4th position.
For the 27 year old Cabrera Cabello it was his second European Tour victory following his first in Vienna in 2009 where he shot a final round of 60 to win.
Westwood took a one shot lead into the final round over Cabrera Bello, Gallacher and Marcel Siem and when the Englishman eagled the par four second hole it appeared as if he could well be a winner of this event for the first time.
Westwood was unable to continue with his fast start and finished joint second but as a result of doing so is now back ahead of McIlory in the number two position in the world ranking behind Luke Donald.
Cabrera-Bello made the cut in his opening two events of the season in Abu Dhabi and Qatar but hardly contended. The current world number 119, though, has assured himself of a huge jump in the rankings given the strength in this field. He is likely to move to around 60th and within striking distance of the all important top 50.
“It is absolutely fantastic to get my name on the same trophy as Ballesteros, Olalzabal, Miguel Angel (Jimenez) and my good friend Alvaro (Quiros)it means a lot to me,” said the winner. “This week has been very special leading or in contention nearly every minute of the tournament. I was really happy with how I handled myself.”
The leading Australian was Brett Rumford who finished in 20th position.
The European Tour will now head to New Delhi for this week’s Avantha Masters.
