Brilliant Lee makes solid start in Japan Open

BY Bruce Young | Japan Tour | 2005 Japan Open | Round Two | 14 Oct 2005

The second round of the Japan Open Golf Championship near Osaka has been completed with 19-year-old New South Wales golfing star, Won Joon Lee, putting together rounds of 70 and 72 to be in 8th place and just four shots behind the thirty six hole leader, Ryoken (Ricky) Kawagishi.

Lee, who last year finished fourth behind Peter Lonard at the 2004 NSW Open, recently won the individual title at the Nomura Cup which was incorporated as part of the Four Nations Championship. The Australian team, of which Lee was a member, won the title continuing Lee’s successful year in 2005.

Lee, from the Concord Golf Club in Sydney, recovered from a disappointing double bogey finish to his first round when he birdied his first hole in round two. Although he bogeyed three of four holes in the middle of his round today he was able to finish the day at one over 72 and is well placed for the weekend.

David Smail, who won this title in 2002, and Steve Conran are the best of the Australasians in third place at two under and two behind the leader. Sharing 8th place with Lee is fellow New South Welshman Paul Sheehan.
