Logjam as NZ Open enters final day

BY Bruce Young | ALPG Tour | 2012 New Zealand Women's Open | Round Two | 18 Feb 2012

There is a six way tie for the lead with one round to play of the ISPS Handa New Zealand Women’s at the Pegasus Golf Course near Christchurch, one of those involved being the amazing 14 year old Lydia Ko.

Ko shares the lead with Colombian Mariajo Uribe, Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, Australian Lindsey Wright, South Korea’s Haeji Kang and American Alison Walshe with another five players just one shot further back.

Ko finished 4th in this event last year and following her stellar performances in Australia in recent weeks she was installed as the favourite to take out her second professional title after becoming the youngest player to ever win a professional event when successful at the recent NSW Open.

Ko today added a second successive 69 but in order to add her own national open title to the New Zealand Amateur title she currently owns then she will need to maintain her good form.

Uribe, Wright, Kang and Walshe all have some LPGA Tour staus with Uribe also a former US Amateur Champion and so Ko will have a big task to overcome her co-leaders and those just off the pace in what promises to be an exciting shootout tomorrow.

Interestingly Wright and Uribe have battled out a final round shootout previously, Uribe coming out on top on that occasions when she won the 2011 Brasil Cup, an unoffical event on the LPGA Tour but one worth more than US$100,000 to the winner.

Seventeen players are within three shots of the lead and realistically all must still consider themselves chances to take out the title tomorrow.
