By the morning of the 4th day, there was an ominous look to the leaderboard. Sitting proud at the top was South African Retief Goosen, winner at Shinnecok Hills last year. The winner of the last 5 US Opens has led going into the final round. He maintained a three-stroke lead over qualifiers Olin Browne and Jason Gore with Campbell trailing by four shots, and Tiger Woods by six.

Much to the delight of the local crowd, Woods was very handily placed should Goosen’s nerve desert him. It did, but it wasn’t Woods who took full advantage. New Zealander Michael Campbell, however, went into the Sunday four shots behind Goosen. And once the Kiwi birdied the first hole and Goosen dropped 3 in the first 3, it was game on.

Campbell played consistent golf, making vital putts while Goosen fell away, carding 81 to drop completely out of the running.

Woods sensed his second major of the year and 10th in all following his US Masters victory in April but his putter deserted him more than a few times. Campbell continued to play the golf of his life and hung on to finish level for the championship, beating Woods by two shots, and in the process becoming the first New Zealander to win the US Open title and the first to win a major title since Bob Charles 42 years ago.
