Nationwide Tour back in Raleigh

The Nationwide Tour swings back into action this week with the staging of the Rex Hospital Open in Raleigh in North Carolina.

The event is played at the TPC Wakefield Plantation layout, its venue since 2001.

Four Australians are currently within the top 35 of the 2012 Nationwide Tour money list including Cameron Percy (6th), recent winner Nick Flanagan (11th), Alistair Presnell (21st) Scott Gardiner (33rd) and Peter Lonard (34th) and all get their chance to make further progress this weekend.

For Percy this is essentially a home game as his US base is only two or so kilometres from this week’s venue. On that basis alone he is well placed to continue his good form.

This article by the PGA Tour’s John Dell provides a great insight into the benefits or otherwise of Percy playing at home this week.

In all, 13 Australasians have start this week including PGA Tour regular Steven Bowditch who was not eligible for a start at the limited field Memorial on the PGA Tour. It will be Bowditch’s 5th Nationwide Tour start of the season after what has been a battle to date on the main tour in 2012.

With Flanagan having won two weeks ago and Percy finishing as the runner-up after a playoff there is every reason to believe that yet another Australian victory is a strong possibility.

Mark Hensby is the only former Australasian winner of the event, that victory coming in 2000 at the Raleigh Country Club.
