Distractions an issue for Day in 2012

Twelve months ago Jason Day finished runner-up at the US Open in an impressive debut. He might have trailed the winner McIlroy by eight shots but Day impressed all with his steely determination especially over the final 18 holes where he dug deep to save par on numerous occasions.

It was a performance which gave hope to his chances of becoming the next Australian to win a major championship.

After all his finish at Congressional had come just two months after a similar effort on debut at the Masters and the golfing world appeared to be at the then 23 year old’s feet.

Roll forward twelve months and Jason Day is in for another great year but it will likely be that much of that will come off the golf course. His wife Ellie is expecting their first child in a month’s time and as Day prepared for this week’s US open he reflected on the fact that off course issues had been a distraction in 2012.

Not only is the baby due, but Day was forced to withdraw from this year’s Masters with an ankle injury which kept him out of the game for a month.

“It has been an average year I guess,” said Day. "Three top tens, one of those in Abu Dhabi. The off course issues have been a distraction but I need how to learn to separate personal life and golf and that is just part of growing.

“It is going to be a hard year on the golf course as my mind is on Ellie and the baby being healthy and that is pretty much what I have been doing all year but having said that it is going to be a good year also because of the arrival of our child.

“My game is perhaps not all that far from where it needs to be and feel there is only upside from here. I have worked hard this year and we are now just entering the second half of the year so hopefully there is plenty of upside in the second half.”

Day will take next week off then play the AT&T event at Congressional but after that his schedule is up in the air as the arrival of the baby looms.
