Play underway at Olympic

Play is underway at the 2012 US Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco and despite the early morning sea mist and coolish temperatures, conditions are as perfect as possible for scoring.

Those out early included the marquee group of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson and there was drama early for Mickelson whose opening tee shot remained up a tree after he had hooked his tee shot at the opening par four 9th (the layout starts at the 1st and 9th holes)

Mickelson managed to salvage a bogey but would then drop another at his second hole and his third to be three over almost before he had started.

Woods opened with three pars and Masters champion Watson bogeyed two of his first three holes.

The early leader was South African Branden Grace who birdied his first and second holes before a bogey at the third had him back in a share of the lead at 1 under.

Already the demanding layout is claiming victims. Only seven of the first 40 players on the golf course are under par and only just at that with 1 under par leading.
