Queenslander Brad Kennedy and Japan’s Yui Ueda lead the Japan Golf Tour’s Gateway to the Open Mizuno Open through 54 holes of the event that will not only determine the outcome of this particular title but the makeup of players from the Japan Golf Tour who will play in this year’s Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
The leading four players in this event not otherwise qualified for the Open will earn the right to play the event near Blackpool in July as will the leading two players from the cumulative 2012 Japan Golf Tour money list.
Kennedy is in his second full season on the Japan Golf Tour and appears to have found a Tour that suits his game and lifestyle. He easily retained his playing rights there in his rookie season last year and although he has done little of note to date in 2012 he now has an opportunity to win for the first time on the Japan Golf Tour and perhaps event gain a start at the Open Championship.
Kennedy won the New Zealand Open at the end of the 2011 season after a playoff with Craig Parry.
Kennedy and Ueda lead by one over Korean Hyung Sung Kim but two shots further back is Australian Brendan Jones for whom a top four finish here would secure him yet another major start having played the US Open last week.
Jones, currently third on the Japan Tour money list, would also earn a place should he finish inside the top two on that list at week’s end although he would need to finish inside the top three at least in this event to do so.
